Our bodies need energy to keep us alive. When we eat and drink we consume energy. Our body then will use that energy in everything active we do which can be anything from breathing to running.

An important part of a healthy diet is balancing the energy you consume to the energy you burn. If you consume more energy (calories) then you burn in one day and continue to do this, you will put on weight. The same for if you consume less energy then burn in one day, you will lose weight.
